Despite indications that the undergrounding of hydro wires during Main Street Renewal would have positive benefits, the City of Ottawa is proceeding with a detailed design based on removing the existing poles and installing overhead wiring on new poles. Read the OOECA Main Street Renewal working group’s brief to persuade the city to bury the hydro wires on at least one side of a three block stretch of Main Street, and the OOECA's recommendations as of June 16, 2014.

The existing Lees Avenue bridge over 417 will be removed this weekend. To safely remove the bridge, Highway 417 will be closed in both directions, starting 6 p.m., Saturday, June 21 until 11:00 a.m., Sunday, June 22 at which time a single lane of traffic will be reinstated in both directions. All lanes on Highway 417, in both directions, will be reopened by Monday, June 23, at 5 a.m.

The City of Ottawa has chosen five finalists for the public art on Main Street proposal. You can view the finalists on the city's website here.

The City of Ottawa's Environmental Remediation Unit has scheduled environmental work at the city-owned property located at 185 Hawthorne Avenue. The property is currently undeveloped park space located within a residential neighbourhood by the Highway 417 Lees Avenue off-ramp. A Phase I Environmental Site Assessment conducted on the property in the mid-2000s identified potential environmental concerns on the site associated with its historical commercial/industrial land use (coal sheds, lumber dealer, etc.).

Glashan Public School, located on Arlington Avenue near Bank Street, is one of Old Ottawa East's grade 7 & 8 feeder schools. Glashan recently finished in 2nd place and also won a creative prize in the Majesta Trees of Knowledge competition for an outdoor classroom. Glashan has now launched their next fundraising initiative for the Glashan Schoolyard Greening Project through an Indiegogo campaign. Indiegogo is a crowdsourcing platform and the goal is to raise $9,000 to depave the schoolyard which must be done before other work can start.
