Planning is underway for an event in September to celebrate Canada's 150th anniversary. The circumnavigation of Rideau Island is a proposed leisurely one-day paddle up the Rideau Canal, down the Rideau River, along the Ottawa River and back on the Canal to Old Ottawa East. Rideau Island is the name for the triangular landform bounded by the Rideau Canal on the west, the Rideau River on the east and the Ottawa River on the north. For more details, see this planning document.

As a sesquicentennial project, the OOECA will be holding monthly gatherings to celebrate Canada's 23 prime minsters. But we need volunteers to outline the lives and accomplishments of their favorite PM and lead the ensuing discussion. Are you interested or do you know somebody (Richard Gwyn where are you?) who'd like to make the case for one of our PMs? If so please contact info@ottawaeast.ca. The first gathering will be on January 30 (second one on February 27) so mark your calendars. More details to be provided closer to the date.

The City of Ottawa’s Environmental Remediation Unit recently found shallow soil contamination at Robert F. Legget Park and the Ottawa Children’s Garden at 321 Main St. in Old Ottawa East. Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAH) compounds were detected at concentrations exceeding provincial standards.
Over the winter, the city will undertake a Phase II Environmental Site Assessment (ESA) to determine the full extent of the contamination, then develop a plan to implement appropriate risk management measures and/or remediation of the site.
